Protesters gathered in Brussels, Belgium on Wednesday to demand support for employment and poverty reduction, ahead of the informal European Union (EU) Summit scheduled on the same day. Measures to deal with deflation and attain growth are the core issues up for discussion at the informal EU summit. Germany, the largest economy in the EU as well as the eurozone, has insisted on cutting down the deficit and introducing structural reforms by debt recipient countries such as Greece. Labor unions and other social organizations throughout the eurozone held a joint protest two hours before the start of the summit next to the conference center. Rather than deregulation, the protesters want to see more growth and investment to push up the employment level. As the protest was organized temporarily the turnout was small. Bernadette Segol, chief of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), said that her union has more than 60 million members throughout Europe. "We are coming here to say that growth will not come from the deregulation and flexibilization of the labor market. Growth will come from responsible central bank, from Euro bonds, from the financial transaction tax and green investment. That's our message," said Bernadette Segol.
