The Education Credit Union (ECU) is a full-service financial institution that helps people in the Region of Waterloo to manage their money and investments. We offer members a full range of financial services, including a comprehensive wealth management program and banking services such as chequing and savings accounts. All this week here on Sunrise, we've tackled the growing trend called the "Boomerang Generation." Adults, for any number of reasons, from financial, to health-related issues, are forced to move back home with their parents. And we've seen it affect a wide range of ages, from 22-year-old Marissa still living with dad, or 47-year-old Sonnie, who is back with her parents. We've seen how it's working for these families, but not for others. An expert on family psychology, Dr. Beth Buckingham, has advice for families dealing with boomerang kids in their homes, or maybe getting ready to face that situation. "I think for Indiana families to know that you're not in isolation," she said, "this trend has impacted families in very many different ways." Dr. Buckingham's advice if you are considering moving home, or having an adult child move back home, is to first set up guidelines and expectation beforehand. Whether it's about chores, helping pay the bills, or even curfew expectations, that will help before problems can start. "It's about what's best for the family, and how can I bring that up and share that and be able to move forward," Buckingham said. If you are a parent having trouble motivating an adult child to finally move out, set a timetable for when they should move out. Come up with a plan, to make sure they make three phone calls a day, for example, to find that job or that next place to live.
